Main differences with other martial arts

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes on throws, pins, ground fighting and Submissions. It was developed from Traditional Judo in the early 20th century by Japanese master Jigoro Kano, who blended elements of several different styles of jujutsu an even older Martial arts. 

BJJ was then moved in Brazil through Japanese immigrants, and the Gracie Family adapted the judo/jujutsu to the violent environement of Rio de Janeiro, even going against the principles of Judo and Traditional martial arts by challenging other martial arts, and going to other Dojos/ academies to prove that their craft was more powerful 1 to 1. Some of those Challenges were particularly violent to prove their points.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu places a strong emphasis on grappling and groundwork, and it teaches practitioners how to control and submit an opponent using joint locks and chokeholds.

The art has been popularized in recent years by Brazilian fighters such as Royce Gracie, who used BJJ to great success in the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship winning the three first editions , the rest was history as after the victoriees every MMA fighter began to train in BJJ.

While BJJ shares some similarities with other martial arts, there are also several key differences. For one, BJJ practitioners wear a gi, or uniform, while most other martial artists do not.

Additionally, BJJ matches typically take place on the mat rather than in a ring or cage, and they are often divided into rounds of five minutes each for white belts, 6 minutes for blue belts, 7 minutes for purple belts, 8 minutes for Brown Belts and 10 minutes for Black belts.

Finally, while strikes are allowed in the self defense aspect of BJJ, they are not the focus of the art, as they are in styles such as karate or kickboxing, mostly they are never strikes/ punches/ kick in the sport aspect of BJJ, focusing all the training on Throws, Pins, Control and Submission when most of the other arts have no idea about the ground fighing , These differences make Brazilian jiu-jitsu a unique and effective martial art.
